3D Scanning the Damaged 9/11 Koenig Sphere
MYND Workshop embarked on a meticulous documentation of the Koenig Sphere, a symbol of resilience and rebirth, located at Liberty Plaza near the World Trade Center in New York, NY. Tasked with a special commission for the 9/11 Museum, our team employed an innovative blend of LiDAR scanning and photogrammetry to capture the essence of this monumental sculpture. The Koenig Sphere, known for its historical significance as a survivor of the tragic events, posed unique challenges due to its grand scale and the intricate details of damage it bore.
Given the restrictions on drone usage within the vicinity, our team engineered a novel solution, employing a high-grade DSLR camera mounted atop an exceptionally tall and robust tripod. This setup ensured stability against the wind, allowing for a comprehensive capture of the sculpture from all angles, including its damaged apex. Similarly, the scanning equipment was secured to guarantee precision in data collection. The project commenced at the break of dawn, extending throughout the day amidst the hustle of plaza visitors, utilizing a singular scanner meticulously maneuvered on a custom-built rolling cart that housed all necessary tools.
The culmination of this project is a stunningly detailed 3D textured mesh, enriched with high-resolution textures that vividly narrate the sphere's history through every scratch and dent. This digital preservation not only serves as a digital testament to New York City's enduring spirit but also showcases MYND Workshop's commitment to overcoming logistical challenges to capture historically significant artifacts.
