Laser Scanning Central Park’s Sheep Meadow

In the summer of 2016, MYND Workshop embarked on an artistic endeavor to capture the essence of New York City's verdant oasis, Central Park, through the lens of laser scanning technology. Focused on the bustling Sheep Meadow, a popular gathering spot for both locals and tourists alike, we meticulously scanned the area, capturing not just the landscape but the fleeting moments of park-goers immersed in their activities. Each scan became a digital time capsule, preserving the minutiae of daily life— from the fashion and hairstyles of the visitors to the majestic sweep of the park's iconic trees. This unique blend of technology and artistry resulted in a series of point cloud renderings that offer a voyeuristic glimpse into the intimate moments within the public space.

These renderings have since transcended their digital origins, gracing the walls of art galleries and the pages of publications, showcasing the intersection of laser scanning technology and creative expression. This project was a testament to the potential of laser scanning not just as a tool for architectural and engineering applications but as a medium for capturing and reinterpreting the world around us in profound and unexpected ways.
