American Academy - Scan to 2D CAD
The American Academy of Arts & Letters, an epitome of Anglo-Italian Renaissance architecture by McKim, Mead & White and the adjoining gallery by Cass Gilbert, stands as a beacon of artistic and architectural heritage. Tasked with the preservation of its richly ornamented exteriors, MYND Workshop embarked on a detailed documentation project, focusing on translating the intricate facades into precise 2D CAD drawings.
The process began with comprehensive laser scanning of the exteriors, capturing the essence of the buildings' elaborate ornamentation. This advanced method provided an accurate point cloud dataset, which served as a detailed reference for our subsequent work. The primary objective was to translate this 3D data into highly detailed 2D CAD drawings, meticulously representing the heavy ornamentation characteristic of the facades.
These 2D drawings were crafted with an emphasis on precision and detail, ensuring every element of the ornamentation was accurately depicted. This attention to detail was crucial, not only for the preservation of the buildings' architectural integrity but also for their landmark status considerations with regulatory bodies like the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission. The 2D CAD drawings, enriched with intricate details of the ornamentation, served as a vital tool for restoration, analysis, and educational purposes.
While the project also involved the creation of a high LOD 3D BIM model, the 2D CAD drawings stand out for their role in traditional architectural documentation and preservation. They bridge the gap between historical craftsmanship and contemporary documentation techniques, ensuring the legacy of the American Academy of Arts & Letters is preserved for future generations in the most detailed and respectful manner. Through this endeavor, MYND Workshop reaffirms its commitment to precision and excellence in the field of architectural documentation and preservation.
