American Academy - Scan to 3D BIM
The American Academy of Arts & Letters, nestled within the historic Audubon Terrace, presented a unique challenge for MYND Workshop, demanding a meticulous approach to document its ornate exterior facades. This project centered around the Anglo-Italian Renaissance building by McKim, Mead & White and the adjacent gallery by Cass Gilbert, both renowned for their intricate architectural details. Our primary goal was to capture these details in three dimensions, ensuring every nuance of the buildings' grandeur was accurately preserved.
Employing advanced laser scanning technology, we embarked on a detailed survey of the exteriors, focusing on the elaborate ornamentation that characterizes these iconic structures. This method allowed us to gather comprehensive data with unparalleled precision, effectively capturing the essence of the buildings' complex designs. The resulting point cloud data served as the foundation for creating a high-level-of-detail (LOD) 3D Building Information Model (BIM) in Revit, offering a digital twin of the structures that encapsulates their architectural splendor in a virtual format.
While the project also involved the creation of 2D CAD drawings highlighting the buildings' ornamental features, our emphasis on 3D modeling provided a dynamic and immersive representation of the facades. This 3D BIM model stands as a testament to the fusion of historical architecture and contemporary digital documentation techniques, offering new avenues for architectural analysis, preservation, and educational purposes.
This endeavor underscores MYND Workshop's commitment to harnessing the power of 3D technology in the service of architectural preservation. By creating a detailed 3D model of the American Academy of Arts & Letters, we have not only safeguarded the intricate details of its heritage but also opened up possibilities for future generations to explore and appreciate the craftsmanship of these monumental buildings in a modern context.
